El amor es un campo de batalla – Love is a Battlefield

Love is a battlefield, sometimes literally, and in more fortunate times merely figuratively. Musicians and poets have compared love and war for generations and the sound of the trumpet serves as a reminder of a time when the instrument was assigned with a task even more important than making music – leading the charge as a fierce emblem of war. Unpublished late 17th century/early 18th century Spanish works for trumpet and soprano explore the powerful symbolic use of the trumpet to express the battles we all must fight in order to conquer the most elusive of prizes – Love, with a capital L.

Like so many of their European contemporaries, the Spanish made many a military foray into Italy (some successful, some less so), and accordingly Spanish composers were greatly influenced by Italian music and Italian opera to some extent was influenced by the time-honored Spanish dramatic style. Such figures as Alessandro Scarlatti even worked for the Spanish Viceroy at Naples, when Spain’s power was so strong that more than half of Italy was dominated by Spain. Thus, pieces by Alessandro Scarlatti round out the theme of battle and war by exploring how conflict sometimes created beautiful music.
